Description: A patient arrives in ED with chest pain. An Abbott iSTAT® troponin-I (cTnI) test is reported as 600 ng/L which is abnormal (definition 40ng/L or greater). The patient is sent by ambulance to regional site for an angiogram. The Internist reviews the case and requests another cTnI; which comes back as less than 20ng/L. The first specimen is rerun on the iSTAT and is also less 20ng/L, which is confirmed by high sensitivity Troponin-I testing. Why was the first result abnormal? How often is this occurring?
