Course/Activity Information

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the terms plasma specific enzymes, non-plasma specific enzymes, enzymes of secretion, enzymes of cellular metabolism
  • Name the enzymes of importance in the diagnosis of alcoholic cirrhosis, bone disease, hepatobiliary disease, hepatocellular disease, muscle conditions, and pancreatic disease.
  • Define the specimen collection and storage conditions for commonly tested enzymes.
  • State the effect of hemolysis, storage temperature and storage pH (where applicable) on measured enzyme activity.
  • For each of the enzymes commonly tested in the lab state/define/explain, as appropriate: the IUB name, EC number, classification, optimum pH, origin, mechanism of action, substrates, inhibitors, cofactors, assay principle, the compound measured in the final step, necessary precautions, reference range and clinical significance.
