Description:
This session addresses the highly infectious nature of measles by demonstrating how a single case imported from another country can have serious outcomes. Measles still circulates in many countries and because of misinformation on various social platforms, has resulted in declining vaccination rates leading to outbreaks with complications and deaths especially in the young. The virtual event will discuss laboratory testing, clinical spectrum of the disease and sequelae, the biology of the virus, pathogenesis and public health measures. The role of surveillance and vaccination in attempting to contain measles will be discussed.

Dr. Kevin Fonseca is a Clinical Virologist at the Provincial Laboratory, Alberta Precision Laboratories, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He has a PhD in Microbiology and MSc in Applied Cell Science and Virology, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology.
He is the Program Lead for the vaccine preventable agents such measles and mumps, and was the chair for the Certifying Committee for the Elimination of Measles & Rubella in Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada in 2015. His research collaborations are in influenza, the arboviruses and point-of care testing and most favorite viruses are measles, mumps, zika virus and hepatitis B.
