Description: New organisms are always appearing in healthcare, from antibiotic resistance to novel pathogens crossing the animal-human species barrier. Each new organism seems to cause us to forget Routine Practices that are in place to keep healthcare workers safe all the time, regardless of a new organism. This presentation will review the history of new organisms in our world, and steps to ensure that we are prepared between outbreaks or pandemics, and how to communicate or inform ourselves in an efficient and accurate manner.

Speaker: Jim Gauthier, MLT, CIC
Jim worked in microbiology laboratories for 17 years, and has also worked as an infection control practitioner for over 30 years. He is board-certified in infection control (CIC), and was the lead educator at Kingston General Hospital during SARS (the original) in 2003. His experience, and his background in stopping the spread of organisms allows him to talk with a sense of humour about new pathogens, and to try to allay fears of organisms like SARS-CoV-2. Jim left front-line healthcare to work for industry in 2015, and acts as the Senior Clinical Advisor, Infection Prevention, North America for Diversey, Inc.
