Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand that gender-related language is constantly evolving and know how critical it is to respect and honour the many different identities of gender diverse people.
  • Learn effective strategies for communicating with and providing care for gender diverse people in an ethical, professional, and affirming manner.
  • Learn about the unique needs and healthcare considerations for gender diverse people in the medical laboratory setting in order to provide the best care possible.

Speakers: B Adair and Julie Coffey

B Adair (he/him) is a Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) consultant from rural Central Alberta. As a gay & transgender man, B passionately provides community and workplace inclusivity training and is an advocate for queer healthcare, neurodiversity and mental health awareness. It’s B’s dream to break down barriers, destroy stereotypes ensure ALL people have access to appropriate care.

Julie Coffey (she/her) is Director of Accreditation and Education for the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare. She is an active member of ISO TC 212 and serves on the  Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Expert Panel on Quality Systems. Most importantly, she is on a quest to elevate the confidence of laboratory personnel in their own abilities by providing empowering, relevant and interactive education.
