Description: This course will cover the natural history of intestinal cestode parasites infecting humans, including typical disease symptoms in the infected host and the usual means of diagnosis.
There are no course prerequisites; however, for a comprehensive understanding of the intestinal helminths and their diagnostic stages found in stool and urine, it is strongly recommended that the learner also complete the courses on nematodes and trematodes of the intestinal and urogenital tracts.

  • Describe the general body type and anatomy of cestodes
  • State the scientific and common name (where applicable) of each cestode covered
  • State the geographical distribution of each cestode
  • State, for each cestode, how infection is acquired and what measures can be used to prevent infection
  • Describe the life cycle of each cestode with particular reference to the stage at which humans become infected
  • Describe the diagnostic stage(s) of each cestode and name the optimal clinical specimen for diagnosis
  • Describe the common symptoms of infection in each case
  • State the preferred treatment method, if any
  • Discuss the importance of recognizing spurious infections and artifacts in clinical specimens
  • Define terms related to cestodes given in the glossary
