Course/Activity Information

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand classification and nomenclature of bacteria.
  • Explain the different types of culture media in routine use and apply how they are selected and used in the processing of clinical specimens.
  • Explain which bacteria will grow and describe the colonial morphology of the bacteria as they pertain to the different types of commonly used culture media used in microbiology.
  • Predict the appropriate atmospheric requirements for incubating inoculated culture.
  • Explain the principles on which microbial identification is based and integrate the tests and procedures required for the proper identification of bacteria and yeast.
  • Describe the rapid biochemical tests in microbiology and explain the expected reaction of commonly isolated bacteria.
  • Describe how phenotypic criteria are used to identify bacteria.
  • Examine molecular biology techniques such as PCR technology and Pulse Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) as they relate to clinical microbiology.
  • Understand how antibiotics are selected by laboratories.
  • Characterize and explain the various principles and methodologies used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria.
  • Outline quality control testing for antibiotics.
  • Outline the susceptibility patterns of those bacterial isolates that demonstrate antimicrobial drug resistance and identify methods of detection.
