Course/Activity Information

Part 1 provides detailed explanations of the sample requirements and routine assays that are used for screening many types of patients.  There are also explanations of the common abnormalities encountered when analyzing samples from patients who require monitoring of anticoagulant medication therapies.

Part 2 begins with strategies for troubleshooting abnormal assay results, then reviews the more specialized assays used for follow-up diagnosis.  There is also a description of platelet function testing, fibrinolysis testing, point-of-care testing, and molecular testing that are performed as part of a more complex workup for rare coagulation abnormalities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Provide a comprehensive review of the principles and practical aspects of routine coagulation assays
  • Correlate the theoretical background information about coagulation with real-world examples of results using data analysis of case studies
  • Describe the troubleshooting steps taken when abnormal assay results are encountered
  • Introduce concepts involved in special coagulation testing and how to select the most appropriate assays for accurate and timely patient diagnosis
