Course/Activity Information

Part 1 is an introduction to the field of Hematology and covers the basics of blood and bone marrow analysis.  It also includes detailed descriptions of red blood cell abnormalities in the context of microscopic morphology.

Part 2 provides additional case studies and correlates morphologic images with CBC analyzer values.  There is also a discussion of the interpretation of the red blood cell indices to determine the causes and remedies of commonly encountered abnormalities on the technical bench.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Visually recognize the microscopic characteristics of normal peripheral blood and bone marrow
  • Provide slide image reviews of some of the common RBC abnormalities in peripheral blood and bone marrow
  • Explain the characteristics and significance of abnormal analyzer results and cellular morphologies

 

Speaker: Terrence Litavec, MLT

 

Terence Litavec has worked as a medical laboratory technologist since 2004 and has served as the MLT Director of the BCSLS. He currently works in the Hematology Department at LifeLabs in Burnaby.  Before that, he worked at Burnaby Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital, as well as Tacoma General Hospital and PhenoPath Laboratories, both in Washington State.  He is certified by both the CSMLS and the ASCP.  He is a certified specialist in hematology and coagulation, and he also has bench experience working in immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, transfusion services, and some molecular methods such as FISH and PCR.  He has always had a passion for teaching, and he has written and presented numerous educational lectures throughout Canada.
