Course/Activity Information

Part 1 discusses the many types of leukemias and lymphomas and provides microscopic images with detailed explanations of the progression of each disease.

Part 2 begins with a review of Hodgkin Lymphoma and platelet disorders as well as slide examples of body fluids such as Pleural Fluid, Peritoneal Fluid, and Synovial Fluid.  Normal and abnormal examples are provided along with techniques for identifying malignant cells that require a follow up diagnosis.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Provide slide image reviews of some of the common WBC abnormalities in peripheral blood, bone marrow, and body fluids
  • Explain the characteristics and significance of abnormal WBC and body fluid morphology
  • Discuss molecular and genetic background information about specific Hematopathologic disease states

 

Speaker: Terrence Litavec, MLT

 

Terence Litavec has worked as a medical laboratory technologist since 2004 and has served as the MLT Director of the BCSLS. He currently works in the Hematology Department at LifeLabs in Burnaby.  Before that, he worked at Burnaby Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital, as well as Tacoma General Hospital and PhenoPath Laboratories, both in Washington State.  He is certified by both the CSMLS and the ASCP.  He is a certified specialist in hematology and coagulation, and he also has bench experience working in immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, transfusion services, and some molecular methods such as FISH and PCR.  He has always had a passion for teaching, and he has written and presented numerous educational lectures throughout Canada.
