We’ll broadcast expert-led sessions to you so you can earn continuing education hours from the comfort of your home or lab.
Saturday October 15, 2022: 09:00 - 16:00 (Eastern)
Session 1 - What can we do? Let’s talk about the shrinking labour pool in the lab
We were in trouble before the pandemic. Record retirements, mental health challenges, crushing workloads, old equipment… then the pandemic strikes. How will we recover? Is it even possible, when the demand for laboratory testing outstrips our human resource capacity? Learn what’s happening across Canada – how innovations are helping education programs increase enrolments, the importance of Lab Wisely, regulation of MLAs, professionals working to full scope and more.
Session 2 - Lab Wisely Panel Discussion
a. Want to improve lab utilization? Advocate for Lab Wisely!
When it comes to inappropriate utilization of laboratory tests, we might think of it as someone else’s problem. However, MLPs are uniquely placed to improve utilization of lab tests and procedures. It’s time to think beyond our traditional roles and cement the notion that ensuring appropriate lab tests and procedures is our professional responsibility.
b. Choosing Lab Wisely-No Longer an Option but a Necessity
The presentation will discuss the supply chain issues faced by BD and the impact it had on the healthcare system; conservation and communication strategies within the hospital and collaboration with our supplier to ensure that necessary collection supplies were available.
Session 3 - Emotionally Safe Support for Children during Lab Visits
This presentation will be delivered from a psychosocial perspective and will incorporate developmentally appropriate techniques for supporting children and their parents during blood draws.
Session 4 - Everything is on Fire – A behind the scenes perspective of how supply chain challenges have impacted laboratory operations
Many lab professionals will remember 2022 as the year they learned the true meaning of words “supply chain”. Shortages of critical supplies from test tubes to tourniquets have caused labs to develop a new appreciation of the supplies they once took for granted and the systems in place to ensure supplies are (usually) always available. This session will look at how the labs at Unity Health Toronto navigated supply chain constraints; we will discuss systems put in place, strategies developed and lessons learned throughout the journey.
Session 5 - Stopping Mental Health Stigma: How to C.A.R.E.
Within this session, participants will learn about the impact of mental health stigma, how to identify it, and how to address it. Tangible strategies to update their vocabulary and facilitate a compassionate perspective regarding mental health will be reviewed. Participants will also become familiar with an acronym, C.A.R.E., which was featured in the most recent (Summer 2022) CJMLS issue. Resources and information regarding mental health will be provided within the session to foster education and awareness and further reduce stigma.
