Eagle, Duck, Turkey, or Vulture – How Do You Fly in the First 90 Days?

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the importance of managing yourself as a new leader
  • Recognize how to engage others as a new leader
  • Gain insights into what “being the boss” is all about

The first days in a new position are critical because small differences in actions can have a huge impact on long-term results.  It is even more challenging when those first days are in a position of leadership and influence. This informal presentation will provide a learning experience that will assist participants in understanding what leadership is all about, and what to do in your first 90 days to increase your likelihood of success and workplace joy. This foundational learning on great leadership that can also be used by informal leaders and independent contributors.

Speaker Bio:

As a multi-faceted senior leader in the Canadian medical laboratory and diagnostics services industry, Christine has spent her 20-year career leading laboratory services delivery in both the private and public sector. Currently, she serves as the administrative director for microbiology at University Health Network and Sinai Health System in Toronto. Christine has held varied positions in the key areas of new testing, business development, operations management, quality, and process engineering.  Here she has demonstrated a special talent for developing creative solutions to improve and expand laboratory testing applications, while also championing innovation, high employee performance and client service. An MLT since 1997, Christine also holds a Masters in Health Administration, a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Human Resource Leader and Clinical Laboratory Quality Manager certification.

In this fun and interactive session, Andrea will teach you seven strategies to creating a more human workplace where people are emotionally connected to each other and to their work.

Together you’ll explore topics like belonging, connection, listening, courage, purpose, emotions, and celebration. You’ll never look at sending an email the same way again!

Speaker Bio:

Andrea is the founder of Vision2Voice Communications, an internal communications agency specializing in creating exceptional employee experiences by building people-first cultures.

Her experience working with clients across North America has given her unique insights into what works and what doesn’t. This has led to a signature approach that is rooted in understanding what really matters to people and emphasizes harnessing employee voices.

Andrea is a storyteller, change expert, and Fearless Organization Practitioner based on the work of Harvard professor Amy Edmondson, the world’s leading authority on psychological safety.

Navigating Challenging Conversations – A Leaders Guide

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the value that conflict can bring to teams and organizations.
  • Take stock of your current workplace conflict climate.
  • Understand your role as a leader in navigating challenging conversations and creating safe spaces.

Do you go out of your way to avoid uncomfortable or difficult conversations, hoping to wait them out and that they will disappear?  Do you wish that you could handle workplace drama productively?

In this workshop you will explore how to lead safe spaces that foster belonging, connectedness and even disagreements.  You will reflect on conflicts and challenging conversations and consider reframing these as a healthy part of team work and organizational life. Through a series of small group discussions, personal reflections and plenary sharing, you will come away with a renewed mindset and some practical tools to skillfully lean into workplace tensions.

Speaker Bio:

Christina draws on over 20 years of experience working in the federal public service in the field of leadership and organizational change. She holds a Masters of Education Degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University. She is an Integral Associate Coach, a qualified Mindfulness teacher, and is a certified Emotional Intelligence and Coaching Circles facilitator.

As an executive coach and leadership development facilitator, Christina delivers leadership programs through the Canada School of Public Service, Telfer Executive Programs & the Global Learning Centre of the UNHCR. She also works with intact teams and individual clients to support them to strengthen both their relationships and their impact.

Inspirational Leadership

CWO (ret’d) Kevin West, MMM, MSM, CD, MA

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the effects of leadership on our team
  • Awareness of the effects on oneself in your role as a leader
  • Understand the importance of being a transformational leader

The session is intended to be a guided discussion on leadership.  It will provide ideas and tools of how to and what to consider when inspiring your team, and yourself to do the best they can.

Speaker Bio:

Kevin has over 35 years of service with the Canadian Forces, 30 years of which were in leadership roles.  He has served at all levels of leadership within the force, culminating his career as the Canadian Forces Chief Warrant Officer in 2013.  He retired from the forces in 2018, and now operates his own consulting company.  He is currently on contract with DND as a Strategic Advisor on the sexual misconduct file.  His passions as in the mentorship and development of future leaders, focused on making others better through sharing his experiences.

Should a registrant need to cancel attendance due to being ill, needing to self-isolate, or not meeting COVID-19 related self screening, CSMLS will not charge a cancellation fee and will provide credit to the registrant. Contact events@csmls.org.

Non-COVID Related Cancellation Policy

The CSMLS office must receive refund requests in writing at events@csmls.org. Requests received on or before Wednesday, February 22, 2023 will be refunded 75% of total fees paid. No refunds will be given after this date.
