The Role of Interprofessional Education for Medical Laboratory Professionals Webinar

Description: The need to provide quality health care is a priority in Canada. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) supports this priority. Within the medical laboratory sector, the delivery of quality services is dependent upon the collaboration of professionals inside (i.e., MLT and MLAT) and outside (i.e., physicians, and epidemiologists). The COVID-19 pandemic has expedited the need for medical laboratory professionals who can work collaboratively with public health professionals who provide clinical care to address the health needs of Canadians. The learning activities of this webinar are designed to create an awareness of the importance of IPC and to direct the audience to resources that are available including the creation of knowledge through a virtual learning environment that facilitates a work-integrated learning (WIL) experience.

At the end of this webinar you will be able to:

  • Describe why interprofessional collaborative practice is important in the practice of medical laboratory science and explain why.
  • Identify and describe the competencies that support interprofessional collaborative practice.
  • Describe the challenges and barriers to implementing interprofessional education.
  • Explain why it is important for Medical Laboratory Professionals to participate in interprofessional education.

 

Speaker: Lavern Bourne, Ph.D, MLT

Lavern is a Senior Teaching Professor at Ontario Tech University from 2008 to present. She has a Ph.D. in public health from Walden University, a Masters of Health Science from Ontario Tech University and a Bachelors of Health Administration from Toronto Metropolitan University.
