Workplace Violence Prevention: Rights, Resources and Tools to Stay Safe While Providing Healthcare Services.
Session Description: Violence in Healthcare is NOT OK. However unfortunately, workplace violence continues to be a high risk to both staff, patients, and clients in the healthcare sector. It is a complex hazard that requires a multifaceted approach to address. During this session, you will learn about your rights and responsibilities, privacy, ethical and work refusal considerations as well as resources and tools that you can access and implement at your workplace to prevent and reduce the risk of workplace violence.

As Vice President of Health, Safety & Wellbeing at PSHSA, Henrietta leads a cross-functional team of health and safety professionals as they support the public sector and Ontario’s occupational health and safety strategy. She enjoys working collaboratively with senior leaders and stakeholders to develop and institute innovative health and safety best practices which will provide the foundation and capacity to achieve greater advances in corporate safety culture. Following 17 years of frontline nursing as a Registered Nurse, Henrietta has achieved national certifications in Occupational Health Nursing, Health & Safety, Disability Management, Auditing, Executive Leadership as well a Master of Health Services Management. She continues to champion workplace violence prevention in healthcare nationally and is proud of her membership and sector contributions associated with the Ontario Joint Ministry Leadership Table on Workplace Violence.

Taking Less Blood from Patients: Why it is Critically Important, How You Can Do It and How it Can Help
Session Description: Latrogenic anemia is common in a hospital setting with approximately 40% of ICU patients receiving a red blood cell transfusion. Transfusions are costly, in scarce supply, and have associated health risks. Patient treatment and management decisions are tied to blood-based laboratory diagnostics, which requires frequent blood draws in particular in an ICU setting. The STRATUS Randomized Clinical Trial was a multi-center Canadian study that demonstrated the positive impact on patient care in collecting less blood in the ICU. This session will describe the specifics of this study to educate the learner on the importance and need for blood to be collected in smaller-volume tubes. Additionally, this session will describe a successful hospital-wide implementation of the low-volume tubes as an opportunity for the learners to consider embarking on this change.

Curtis Oleschuk is a Clinical Biochemist and Service Chief for Clinical Biochemistry (additionally overseeing Specimen Management) at Kingston Health Sciences. Dr. Oleschuk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine.
Jeannie Callum is a Hematologist and Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Callum is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine.
Deborah Siegal is a Hematologist at The Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Siegal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and a Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

You may be wondering why and how…well trends are cyclical and as for the second question, this workshop will feature the Triple P approach in addressing your stress and supporting stressed-out patients. You will learn step by step how to Prepare yourself for stressful situations with patients, Provide a supportive experience for patients (and decrease their stress and anxiety levels), and develop your own Practice to address your personal stress levels.

Speaker: Rosina Mete, MSc, PhD, RP
Dr. Rosina Mete is the Director of Faculty in the Masters of Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University in Canada. She has also worked as a registered psychotherapist for ten years and specializes in supporting individuals with depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, chronic pain, and chronic illness. Dr. Mete is a Board Director with the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention (CASP) as well as the Counsellor Educator and Supervisors Chapter with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). Her research interests and publications include mental health care, addressing stigma, counselor education and curriculum, leadership development, and technology in higher education.

The Importance of Blood Culture Collection for the Diagnosis and Management of Sepsis
Session Description: Bloodstream infections can lead to potentially life-threatening conditions, including sepsis. Identifying and treating symptoms associated with bloodstream infections quickly and effectively can significantly impact patient mortality. Blood culture is an important tool for the diagnosis of bloodstream infection and choices made during specimen collection can have a downstream impact on laboratory results. Inadequate collection technique may compromise specimen quality, resulting in contamination or reduced culture sensitivity. This lecture will review the importance of looking at the complete blood culture diagnostic pathway as well as provide a blood culture collection best practice training based on the latest guidelines.

Speaker: Stéphane Beauchamp, T.M., MSc.
After obtaining his MLT certification, Stéphane received his Bachelor’s in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Montreal, followed by a Master’s in Applied Microbiology from Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique. Stéphane began his career as an MLT and later took on the role as Quality Manager in the diagnostic laboratory. Stéphane joined BD-Canada in 2015 as a Clinical Specialist for Specimen Management, and became the Clinical Team Lead in 2018. Most recently in 2021 Stéphane has taken on the role as Canadian Medical Affairs manager with the BD Integrated Diagnostic Solutions division. Stéphane is dedicated to educating healthcare professionals to ensure quality laboratory results and improving patient care.
