Description:
Genetic testing is a relatively new tool available within the scope of precision medicine. It includes a broad spectrum of applications ranging from prenatal screening to cancer diagnosis and targeted treatments. For genetics to be of clinical utility, a good knowledge of gene-disease relationships is required. In the fast-paced field of cardiogenetics, core genes have been known since almost 35 years but new associations are still frequently reported. To keep track, the laboratory and its staff need to evolve continuously through specialized equipment and training. A highly dedicated team is thus required to provide reliable genetic results of great clinical impact.
Date: April 18, 2024
Time: 12pm – 1pm (ET)

Course/Activity Information

By the end of this session, you will understand:

  1. Mechanisms of heredity
  2. Genetics in cardiovascular diseases
  3. Technical aspects of genetic testing in a clinical lab

Speakers:

Dr. Benjamin Neveu, clinical biochemist, MD, Montreal Heart Institute

Dr Mathieu Provençal PhD, DEPD, CSPQ

Nathalie Lefebvre, coordinator, LDM

Graduating with a PhD in Biochemistry in 2018, Benjamin Neveu then completed his post-doctoral training in Clinical Biochemistry in 2020. He has been employed at the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory of the Montreal Heart Institute since the end of his academic career. He therefore applies his knowledge of molecular biology and genetics in clinical practice, specifically in the context of hereditary cardiovascular diseases. Still, to provide a highly adapted and personalized laboratory service, it is with great interest that he actively participates in the deployment of new tools and cutting-edge technologies in molecular diagnostics.

Dr. Provençal obtained in 2009 is Ph.D. in physiology at the Faculté de Médecine at Université de Montreal. He obtained his post-doctoral degree in clinical biochemistry in 2011 and started working as a clinical biochemist at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal. In the private sector in 2011, he co-founded an IVF Clinic (Fertilys) and acted as the laboratory director until 2014. In 2013, Dr. Provençal published the book Conceiving: Preventing And Treating Infertility. In 2021, he became associate director of the laboratory medicine department for the McGill-OPTILAB network. Since May 2023, Dr Provencal is now the Clinical Lead at Roche Diagnostics Canada

Nathalie Lefebvre is a graduate of the College of Rosemont - DEC Medical Laboratory Technique in 2002. Having had a brother who died of a heart condition far too young, and after a few internships at the ICM, she knows it is there that she wants to pursue a career. Now, she has more than 21 years of laboratory experience. She completed the OPTMQ “Molecular Biology: From Theory to Practice” course in 2006, which allowed her to begin her first DNA extractions manually. In 2017, she took the plunge and officially joined the LDM team.
