Session Description:
The semen analysis is a fundamental part of an infertility assessment, and comprises a range of individual tests, including sperm concentration, motility, vitality, and morphology, that reflect different aspects of sperm cell formation and function. There is now an ISO Standard for Basic semen examination (23162:2021), which is reflected in the 6th WHO manual for the examination and processing of human semen (2021).
This presentation will discuss how each aspect of a semen analysis should now be performed, the rationale behind these approaches, and also how the results are used to diagnose infertility and to create fertility treatment plans.

Speaker: Sharon Mortimer, PhD

Dr Sharon Mortimer is a reproductive biologist, with a research interest in sperm function, a clinical embryologist, and a consultant in the development, design, and improvement of assisted conception programs. She became a CFAS-certified ART Laboratory Scientific Director in 2013 and a Certified Organizational Coach in 2022.
Sharon co-authored "Quality and Risk Management in the IVF Laboratory" (Cambridge University Press), more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and ten international professional consensus guidelines. She is currently the Scientific Director of the Fertility Laboratory in St John’s NL, and Adjunct Professor in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UBC.
