Description: Enhance your understanding of the clinical indications for infusion of red blood cells, platelets, plasma, granulocytes and low titre group O whole blood. Topics include the manufacturing process, indications, dose and administration (infusion) of various blood components as well as the storage and transport conditions, and alternative management strategies.

Prior to attempting this course, the learner will:

• Current or previous experience in hospital transfusion service or Canadian Blood Services

Learning Outcomes:

• Describe various blood components that are currently available for therapeutic use
• Describe manufacturing process of various blood components
• List the indications for each blood component type discussed
• Describe the dose and administration (infusion) of various blood components
• Describe the nursing pre-administration safety steps that should be taken prior to initiating a blood transfusion
• Describe the storage and transport conditions required for each blood component type
• Explain why granulocyte transfusion is a rare event
• Understand the current use of low titre group O whole blood in Canada
