  • Current or previous experience in hospital transfusion service or Canadian Blood Services

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe various blood components that are currently available for therapeutic use
  • Describe manufacturing process of various blood components
  • List the indications for each blood component type discussed
  • Describe the dose and administration (infusion) of various blood components
  • Describe the nursing pre-administration safety steps that should be taken prior to initiating a blood transfusion
  • Describe the storage and transport conditions required for each blood component type
  • Explain why granulocyte transfusion is a rare event
  • Understand the current use of low titre group O whole blood in Canada
